Every winter, when her lemon tree produces ripe fruit, my mother prepares this meal. An excellent Christmas present for neighbours and friends.
– ¼ cup butter, softened– ¾ cup white sugar– 2 egg– 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel– 2 cups all-purpose flour– 1 teaspoon salt– 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder– ¾ cup milk– ½ cup chopped walnut– 2 tablespoons white sugar– 2 teaspoons lemon juice

1
Set oven temperature to 350 F (175 C). Grease a 9 by 5 inch loaf pan very lightly.
2
Whip butter and 3/4 cup sugar in a large bowl until frothy. After beating well each egg, add the lemon peel. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder in a separate bowl.
3
Mix the flour and milk into the egg mixture, stirring slightly to incorporate. Mix nuts just enough to integrate. Pour batter into loaf pan.
4
Bake bread for 50–55 minutes in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into centre comes out clean.
5
In a small bowl, dissolve 2 tablespoons sugar in lemon juice. Glaze loaf after 10 minutes of cooling.
