This Apple French Toast Casserole has fresh apples, a simple streusel, and can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight. Easy fall breakfast!
FOR THE APPLE MIXTURE:– 3 cups (350 grams) chopped apple– 2 tablespoons (25 grams) granulated sugar– 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

FOR THE FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE:– 1 (16-18 ounce) loaf day-old French bread , cubed into 1-inch piece– 8 large egg– 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk– 1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar– 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract– 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

FOR THE CRUMB TOPPING:– 1/3 cup (42 grams) all-purpose flour , spooned & leveled– 1/2 cup (100 grams) light brown sugar , lightly packed– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon– Tiny pinch of salt– 1/4 cup (60 grams) cold unsalted butter , cubed into small piece

Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with butter or generously spray with nonstick cooking spray. Put aside.

Mix diced apples, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a large bowl. Set aside.

Place half of the cubed bread in the baking dish and spread it evenly. Spread all of the chopped apple mixture on the bread, then top with the remaining bread. Save.

Add milk, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla, and 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon to lightly mixed eggs in a large bowl. Pour mixture over bread in baking dish. With bread.

Mix flour, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt in a medium basin, then add cold cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the mixture until crumbly.

Store the French toast casserole in the refrigerator with a tight lid until you're ready to bake it.

Let the French toast casserole remain at room temperature for 30 minutes while the oven heats up.After 30 minutes, uncover and crumb top the French toast bake.
TO ASSEMBLE AND BAKE THE CASSEROLE:

The top should be set and hard in the middle after 45–60 minutes at 350°F (177°C). To avoid top browning, cover with foil for the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
